Building a Realistic World for My First Novel

As an outsider to the literary scene, I have always harbored a desire to write fiction, but I spent my entire career waiting for a story that would be both fun to tell and worthwhile to explore. I didn't want to write just any story—I wanted to create one that would excite me as a reader and challenge me as a writer. When inspiration finally struck, I knew that the unique voice I could bring to the world of fiction would stem from my deep experience in the technology industry.

A Commitment to Realism

It was crucial to me that my novel present a "what-if" scenario grounded in reality—one that avoids cheap tricks and unresolved plot holes. I wanted my story to be inspired by a world that could plausibly exist, filled with characters who think, feel, and act as real people would in similar situations. Achieving this level of realism requires careful planning and a meticulous approach to storytelling.

Drawing from Experience

My extensive background in software development, spanning multiple technical disciplines, has been instrumental in shaping my approach. Over the years, I have had the opportunity to meet a diverse range of individuals, each with their own unique perspectives and experiences. Through these interactions, I have learned that stereotypes rarely hold true in real life—and I strive to reflect that complexity in my characters.

I've also come to understand that plans are simply a list of things that can go wrong. This insight drives me to introduce unexpected twists and turns throughout my narrative, ensuring that my story remains engaging and thought-provoking.

Crafting Realistic Characters

One of my primary goals is to create characters with depth and authenticity. I recognize that good people sometimes make mistakes, and even villains perceive themselves as the heroes of their own stories. My intention is to build characters who are relatable, flawed, and multi-dimensional, adding a layer of emotional resonance that draws readers into the world I am constructing.

The Process of Exploration

Building this world requires deep exploration—not just of the external elements such as technology and plot devices, but also of myself as a writer. I delve into the motivations, backgrounds, and intricacies of my characters to ensure they resonate with authenticity. Every aspect of the story must serve as a complete and solid foundation rather than a mere facade.

Bringing It All Together

Ultimately, my goal is to craft a story that feels real, compelling, and thought-provoking. By leveraging my unique perspective and experiences, I aim to create a novel that captivates readers and offers them an immersive experience they won't forget.
